Ich könnte meine Arbeiten einstellen, wenn sie nicht nebenbei auf meine Selbstbelehrung zugeschnitten wären, also auf meine persönlichen Defizite. Sonst könnte ich natürlich auch meine Kinder und Enkel befragen und mich „ein Stück weit“ entmündigen. (Ich bin gespannt, ob die KI auch schon diese beliebte Korrespondenten-Redeformel einbauen kann oder sie in Zukunft vermeiden hilft…)

Ich habe mich aber auch ein Stück weit bei einem sehr klugen Menschen kundig gemacht, bei Hans Brandeis, einem bekannten (Musik-)Ethnologen, absoluter Fachmann für alle Formen der Boot-Lauten auf den Philippinen. Hier seine (von mir gekürzten) Ausführungen:

BOAT LUTES AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
These days, there is a lot of talking about artificial intelligence (AI) and that certain program called „ChatGPT.“ I put the program to a test. I thought that, at least for me, the best topic would be Philippine boat lutes, because most of the published literature comes from me so that it’s easy for me to judge where the information of the AI chat program comes from.
I started with a very simple question: „Please, tell me something about Philippine boat lutes!“ The program started fiddling around telling me something about string instruments played by seafarers on boats and people living in coastal areas. This, of course, is totally wrong, as the name „boat lute“ is only applied to the instruments because of their boat-like shapes. Then, I told the program that boat lutes are never played on boats or in coastal areas, but usually in the mountains, etc. etc. It means that you have to feed the program with information to rely on, and it will provide you some nice summaries.
I asked the program: „What is a kuglung?“ The program answered that it does not know what a kuglung is and asked me to provide some information. Then I cut and pasted long portions of my article on the Philippine boat lutes and hala, it gave me an answer what a kuglung is.
I also asked about the number of strings, and the AI program fiddled around that there are lutes with 2, 3 or 4 strings. After I made clear that there are no Philippine boat lutes with three or four strings, I asked again about the number of strings. Then, the AI program correctly answered: „Philippine boat lutes typically have two strings.“ Me: „But there is one exemption: the boat lutes of the Alangan Mangyan people of Mindoro Island have only one string, instead of two.“ I asked for the number of strings again, and the program now answered: „Most Philippine boat lutes, such as the kudyapi and the Maguindanaoan kutyapi, have two strings. However, there is one exception: the boat lutes of the Alangan Mangyan people of Mindoro Island have only one string, instead of two.“
I was curious about the ability of the program to extract information from a kind of table and transform it into sentences. Therefore, I copied and pasted the following text (I gave the AI program the complete text, but I shortened it here, just to give a sample):
„The following is a list of all the ethnic groups using boat lutes in the Philippines. The name of each respective ethnic group can be read in the first line of each paragraph.
Mindanao
Higaonon (Plates 6-7)
Settlement area: Provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon, Northern and Central Mindanao.
Local name of boat lute: kutiyapì.

The AI chat program answered with the following summaries:

It’s obvious that the AI program only picks up some names of ethnic groups, actually always the same names, but leaves out many others…
So far… this is just to give you an idea… all this is quite remarkable…
CONCLUSION: the system forgot about everything that I taught it before.

Naja, eigentlich lernt das System ja ganz gut. Es ist nur so, dass es vom Informationszuwachs durch Nutzer offensichtlich abgeschnitten worden ist. Ich nehme an, in der Vorphase des Projekts, bis 2021, wurde das System mit einer Vielzahl von Quellen gefüttert, auf die es sich jetzt bezieht. Neue Quellen werden wahrscheinlich nur durch Mitarbeiter des Projekts zugeführt. Das ist auch verständlich, denn wer garantiert für die Qualität der Quellen, die von Nutzern eingespeist werden. Es gibt sicher eine ganze Reihe von Leuten, die das System mit irgendwelchen Fake-News und wissenschaftlichem Unsinn füttern würden. Schließlich gibt es ja auch eine Reihe von Leuten, die ein solches (oder auch jedes Projekt) – aus welchen Gründen auch immer – einfach nur zerstören wollen. Das soll natürlich unterbunden werden. Ein Nutzer – in diesem Falle also ich – kann aber zu jeder Reaktion des Systems einen Kommentar abgeben, der wahrscheinlich von den Projektmitarbeitern zur Verbesserung des Systems verwendet wird
Ich kenne mich mit diesem Zeug natürlich überhaupt nicht aus, nehme aber an, dass es im Wesentlichen auf Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung beruht. Das System kann ja schließlich nichts wirklich verstehen. Es werden ja nur Sprachobjekte miteinander verknüpft, die für das System keinerlei Bedeutung haben (können). Jedem Begriff und jeder Aussage werden wahrscheinlich eine Art „Relevanzwerte“ zugeordnet, die sie mit anderen Begriffen und Aussagen verbinden. Daraus baut das System dann irgendwelche Aussagen zusammen, deren „Wahrheitsgehalt“ sich aus Wahrscheinlichkeiten ergibt. Ich denke mir das nur so, habe aber eigentlich keine Ahnung von dieser Materie…

Verstehe…absurd ist nur, dass das Ding Lyrik verfassen können soll. Natürlich nur für Leute, die Verse, die sie nicht verstehen, am ehesten für Lyrik halten.

Das ist halt „Kunscht“…Ich werde das System einmal fragen, ob es mir ein Gedicht über Bootslauten machen kann…
